BACHELOR OF MUSIC

An undergraduate degree for serious musicians – and thinkers.

The Barenboim-Said Akademie’s Bachelor of Music is a four-year, accredited undergraduate degree. The Bachelor of Music is offered in all orchestral instruments, piano, and composition.

The Bachelor of Music is intended for musicians who are looking for an undergraduate education that bridges intensive music performance studies with a strong grounding in the humanities.

Scholarship, stipends, and housing

There are no tuition or course fees for Bachelor of Music students.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music at the Akademie receive a means-independent, non-repayable monthly grant. The grant amount is aligned with the maximum rate of the German Federal Law for Supporting Education, with a current rate in the 2017-18 year of EUR 735.00 per month, for every month of enrollment.

Additionally, all Bachelor of Music students enrolled at the Barenboim-Said Akademie are eligible for shared student housing, at no additional cost.

Who should apply?

  • Applicants to the Akademie’s Bachelor of Music should hold a diploma (or its equivalent) from a secondary school or high school at the time of enrollment.
  • Applicants from certain countries may need to have completed up to one year at a recognized institution of higher education.
  • If you are in your last year of high school, or your first year of an undergraduate music degree, the Bachelor of Music is likely the best fit for you.

  • If the Bachelor of Music seems right for you, please view the pre-screening and audition requirements listed for your instrument below – make sure the repertoire that is required for the Bachelor of Music admissions process is a good match for your current skill and experience.
  • Go to the Apply page and click Apply Now. You will be redirected to SlideRoom, the Akademie’s application portal. Once you complete the registration, profile creation and sign-in process, select the Bachelor of Music application from the list of available options.

Bassoon
Pre-Screening Repertoire
  • A fast movement of a Baroque or classical sonata or concerto
  • An étude of the applicant’s choice

Audition Repertoire
  • Two contrasting movements of a Baroque or classical sonata or concerto
  • An étude of the applicant’s choice
Cello
Pre-Screening Repertoire
  • The first movement of one of the following concertos: Dvorak, Elgar, Haydn in C or D, Schumann
  • One movement of a Bach suite

Audition Repertoire
  • The first movement of one of the following concertos: Dvorak, Elgar, Haydn in C or D, Schumann

  • A sonata movement by Beethoven or Brahms
Clarinet

Composition
Pre-Screening Requirements
  • Video Recording: either a work by J.S. Bach or any solo work from the Classical or Romantic era, played on the applicant’s main instrument
  • Portfolio: three to five recent compositions
  • Optional: video recordings from performances of any works submitted in the applicant’s portfolio

Entrance Exam

Double Bass
Pre-Screening Repertoire
  • Two contrasting pieces from the standard repertoire, including individual movements of sonatas, suites or concertos

Flute

Harp

Oboe
Pre-Screening Repertoire
  • Both the 1st and 2nd movements from a Classical concerto of the applicant’s choosing (such as Krommer, Haydn, Lebrun, Mozart)
  • Choose one: an étude or one movement of any piece for solo oboe

Audition Repertoire
  • Three complete works from different eras; one of these works should be an entire Classical concerto (such as Krommer, Haydn, Lebrun, Mozart)
  • Short sight-reading exercise
Percussion

  • Timpani: E. Keune Etüde Nr. 142
  • Snare Drum: H. Knauer Etude Nr. 7 (6/8)
  • Marimba or Vibraphon: Solo with 4 mallets

  • Choose one: either one movement from a Romantic or 20th century violin concerto, or a caprice by Paganini or Wieniawski
