biography

Prof. Dr. James S. Helgeson is a scholar and composer who works at the intersections of music, literature and philosophy. His first degree was from the Curtis Institute of Music, followed by a bachelor degree at Oberlin College/Conservatory. In Paris, he studied at the Ecole normale supérieure (rue d’Ulm) and the Université de Paris-VII. His first PhD is from Princeton University, where he examined Renaissance theories of music and poetry. He is currently completing a second doctorate in Music Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London. Prof. Dr. Helgeson is the author of two monographs in Renaissance studies, an edited volume, and numerous articles, and has taught in the US (Columbia University) and the UK (University of Cambridge, University of Nottingham), as well as in Berlin, where he is based.
