BIOGRAPHY

Klaus Thunemann was born in Magdeburg, Germany and originally wanted to become a pianist. It was not until the age of 18 that he turned to the bassoon. He studied in Berlin gained his artistic diploma in 1960.
From 1962 to 1978 he was principal bassoonist with the North German Radio (NDR) Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. He was prize winner at the German Radio (ARD) music- competition.
He has performed solo –concertos with many Orchestras worldwide. Since more than 25 years permanent chamber-music partner of Heinz Holliger. Recordings and frequently cooperation with Alfred Brendel, Gidon Kremer, Andras Schiff, and other artists. Guest at all the important music festivals in Europe.
As well as maintaining his highly successful performing career, he is also a renowned teacher. Enormous number of his former students have many positions in all the big orchestras in Europe. Currently, he is teaching at the Chamber Music Institute Madrid and is guiding a Bassoon Solo Class at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Among a lot of recordings made by Klaus Thunemann, those with the I Musici di Roma and the Academy of St. Martin in the fields have achieved particular acclaim.
