Toward the end of the 1860s, Johannes Brahms was struggling to finish his First String Quartet—and trying to emerge from the dominating shadow of Beethoven. He indirectly drew support from Franz Schubert, who had found himself in a similar situation when working on his “Quartet Movement” half a century earlier. Not only was Brahms instrumental in arranging the posthumous premiere of Schubert’s groundbreaking fragment, it also had an audible influence on his own C-minor Quartet. The Belcea Quartet juxtaposes these two pieces with Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” quartet of 1824.
Grégoire Vecchioni takes over the viola part in this concert for Krzysztof Chorzelski, who unfortunately had to cancel his participation due to illness.
