The double bass serves as the musical foundation of the symphony orchestra, but it is rarely heard as a solo instrument. This season for one night, it takes center stage at the Pierre Boulez Saal in a program of chamber music. Nabil Shehata, former principal double bass of the Berliner Philharmoniker and a faculty member of the Barenboim-Said Akademie, explores the wide-ranging repertoire for his instrument together with cellist Tim Park and pianist José Gallardo. The three artists perform original works by Giovanni Bottesini and Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg as well as Shehata’s own arrangements, including of Max Bruch’s famous Kol Nidrei, originally scored for cello and orchestra.
