Arnold Schoenberg
String Quartet No. 3 Op. 30

Having thrown the doors wide open to atonal music with the 1908 premiere of his Second String Quartet, Arnold Schoenberg would not return to the genre for almost two decades. By the time he did, in 1927, he had developed his “method of composing with twelve tones which are related only with one another” and set out to write his first twelve-tone string quartet. His student Anton Webern reacted enthusiastically: “I search for words to describe my impression; perhaps I can say it best this way: that with each new work from you, my whole world view is changed.” In the third concert of its season-spanning Schoenberg cycle, the Staatskapelle String Quartet presents the piece together with Webern’s 1905 Quartet and Haydn’s F-minor Quartet Op. 20 No. 5.
